3. OSHA NH3 Reference Limits
Configure your thresholds with these limits in mind:
| Level | Limit | Timeframe |
| 25 ppm | ACGIH TLV (Recommended) | 8-hour TWA |
| 35 ppm | OSHA STEL | 15-minute |
| 50 ppm | OSHA PEL | 8-hour TWA |
| 300 ppm | IDLH | Immediately Dangerous |
Recommended settings: Warning at 25 ppm, Critical at 50 ppm.
4. Installation
Location Selection
- Within the area you want to monitor for NH3 accumulation
- Within a reasonable distance of a standard 120V outlet (or configured for the solar option if applicable)
- Where cellular signal is available — verify before permanent mounting
- Protected from direct water exposure (unless enclosure is rated for outdoor use)
- Not in direct sunlight or near heat sources
- At breathing level height (~1.5m / 5ft) for representative air sampling
Ammonia is lighter than air and tends to accumulate near the ceiling in enclosed spaces. Consider mounting height based on your specific monitoring goals.
Sensor Warm-Up
After powering on, the device requires a 3-minute warm-up period before readings stabilise. During warm-up the dashboard shows the device as online but readings may be inaccurate. This is normal.

2
Set NH3 Warning High to 25 ppm and Critical High to 50 ppm
3
Ensure your email and phone number are configured in your account profile for alert delivery
8. LED Status Indicators
| Breathing Cyan | Connected to Particle Cloud — operating normally |
| Blinking Green | Connecting to cellular network |
| Blinking Yellow | Connecting to Particle Cloud |
| Blinking Red | Error condition — check serial monitor |
| Solid White | Firmware update in progress — do not power off |
9. Maintenance
Sensor Recalibration
- Monthly: Verify readings in clean outdoor air (should read near 0 ppm)
- Annually: Consider sensor replacement if drift exceeds ±10 ppm in clean air
Cleaning
Keep sensor openings free from dust. Do not use liquids, solvents, or compressed air directly on sensor elements.
Firmware Updates
Delivered over-the-air via Particle Cloud. Keep the device powered during updates (solid white LED).
10. Troubleshooting
Device shows Offline on dashboard
Check the device is powered and LED is breathing cyan. Verify cellular coverage. Metal enclosures may reduce signal.
NH3 readings too high in clean air
Move device outdoors for 30 minutes. If readings don't drop below 5 ppm, the sensor baseline needs adjustment.
Not receiving alerts
Check contact preferences in account settings. Verify phone number format (+1XXXXXXXXXX). Check spam folder for emails.
Dashboard shows "No data yet"
Ensure the device is claimed to your account and showing Online. Data appears within 15 seconds of connection.
